In this article, I explore how each type of nuclear propulsion works, the benefits and risks, and the recent research being done to improve the safety of the reactor — in particular, the intricate design of the cermet reactor fuel that will prevent a meltdown from occurring. I also go over the main companies working on this technology, make some recommendations for future research, and make predictions for when this technology will be ready for flight.
